The DSTI National Youth Service Programme provides unemployed graduates with structured, real-world experience while supporting national development priorities.
About the DSTI-NYS Programme
The Department of Science and Innovation National Youth Service (DSTI-NYS) programme forms part of government’s broader National Youth Service initiative. It is managed by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) under the National Research Foundation.
The programme places unemployed graduates under the age of 35 at partner institutions for a period of 12 months. Participants receive a monthly stipend intended to support basic living expenses during the placement period.

Why the Programme Matters
Youth unemployment remains one of South Africa’s most pressing challenges. Programmes such as DSTI-NYS offer more than temporary relief — they provide graduates with meaningful exposure to professional environments, increasing their chances of long-term participation in the economy.
By combining public service with skills development, the programme also reinforces the role young professionals play in advancing innovation and national development.
