45.8%: Nearly Half of South Africa's Youth Are Unemployed Right Now — Here Is Every Opportunity Still Open This Month
Statistics South Africa released its Q1 2026 labour figures this week. The numbers are the worst in years. But there are still government programmes, learnerships and internships accepting applications right now — some closing within days.
The numbers came out this week. According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey from Statistics South Africa, the youth unemployment rate climbed to 45.8% in Q1 2026 — up two percentage points from the previous quarter. South Africa lost 258 000 youth jobs in three months. The total number of unemployed young people aged 15–34 now stands at 4.7 million.
For young people aged 15–24, the picture is bleaker still. Unemployment in that group hit 60.9%. The absorption rate — the share of young people actually working — fell to 10.1%, the lowest of any age group in the country. For every young South African with a job, 2.7 do not have one.
"More than four in ten young South Africans aged 15–34 are not working, not studying, and not in any training programme. That is the real number behind the headline."
This article is not going to repeat the bad news and stop there. Below is a verified list of every government programme, learnership and internship still open for applications right now — some closing as soon as this week.
Why The Numbers Got Worse This Quarter
Stats SA pointed to community and social services, construction and transport as the industries that shed the most jobs. The Statistician-General flagged the Middle East crisis as a pressure on fuel and production costs, which businesses passed on through retrenchments and hiring freezes.
Ravi Naidoo, CEO of the Youth Employment Service, was direct in his assessment: "Young people face severe competition from more experienced workers for what are in essence entry-level jobs. They also lack work readiness, as neither education nor families have been able to prepare them for formal sector employment."
The NEET rate — young people not in employment, education or training — rose to 37.6% for those aged 15–24 and 45.6% for those aged 15–34. Young women are disproportionately affected, with a NEET rate of 39.2% among females aged 15–24, compared to 36% for young men.
Stats SA also highlighted a trap that will be familiar to many job seekers: "Nearly six in ten unemployed young people had no previous work experience. Without experience, youth struggle to get hired — yet without being hired, they cannot gain experience." It is a closed loop. Learnerships and government internships are the only mechanism that breaks it — they give you the experience without requiring you to already have it.
"The system is not broken by accident. But there are doors inside it that are open right now — and most people do not know they are there."
What Is Still Open For Applications Right Now

If Nothing Above Applies To You Right Now
Not every opportunity will fit every person. Some are province-specific. Some require a degree. If none of the above match your situation, here is what is worth doing while you wait for the right one to open:
- Set a Google Alert for "learnership 2026" and "internship 2026 South Africa" — new ones open every week
- Complete your Z83 form now and keep a clean copy ready — many government applications close within 7 days of opening
- Find your SETA — all 21 SETAs offer funded learnerships within their sector, many with no experience required
- Apply to multiple opportunities at once — there is no rule against applying to several government departments simultaneously
- Never pay to apply for any job or learnership — any request for payment is fraud

45.8% is a number that deserves to be said plainly. It means that nearly half of South Africa's young people who want to work cannot find work. The data shows that young women, and particularly those between 15 and 24, are the most exposed. The NEET numbers — young people entirely disengaged from work and education — are rising year on year.
None of this is inevitable. The EPWP will pay you R8 800 a month to work inside a government department. The PPRA will give you a free NQF qualification and the licence to earn commission in the property sector. The Department of Defence will pay you a government salary with nothing more than a Grade 12 certificate. These are real programmes with real money attached to them, and they are open right now.
The applications are free. The deadlines are this month. There is no good reason not to send one in.
