nternship Opportunity: Support Climate Action under the Paris Agreement Intern: NDC Assist II – Article 6 Capacity Building Project Location: Pretoria | Duration: 5 months (until 31 December 2025) Are you a recent graduate with a keen interest in international climate policy and sustainable development? GIZ South Africa is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated intern to join the NDC Assist II: Article 6 Capacity Building project – a vital initiative supporting South Africa’s contribution to the Paris Agreement and the achievement of national climate goals. About the Project The Article 6 Capacity Building project forms part of the global NDC Assist II programme, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). In close partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and the Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE), this initiative aims to strengthen South Africa’s readiness to participate in carbon market mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. From shaping governance frameworks and MRV systems to supporting sectoral analysis and capacity building, the project is central to South Africa’s climate ambitions and its integration into global climate cooperation. What You Will Be Doing As an intern in this dynamic environment, you will provide both technical and administrative support, contributing to a range of activities, including: Conducting research and preparing information on international climate policy, with a focus on Article 6 mechanisms Supporting the planning and delivery of workshops, training, and capacity building initiatives Assisting with project management tasks, such as minute-taking and meeting coordination Creating presentations and communication materials for internal and external stakeholders Strong communication skills in English (written and verbal) Proficiency in MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Teams) Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving ability Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional setting A proactive, reliable, and engaged approach to learning and contribution Willingness to upskill and adapt to new tasks What We Offer First-hand exposure to international climate cooperation and market-based mechanisms A supportive and inclusive work environment The opportunity to work closely with national and international partners on high-impact initiatives Experience within one of the world’s leading implementing organisations for sustainable development
