The Stellenbosch Municipality Fire Fighter Learnership Programme gives learners an opportunity to gain real workplace experience in an operational fire department.
Successful applicants will spend 12 months learning from experienced firefighters while participating in municipal emergency services under supervision.
The programme supports candidates who want to build long-term careers in Fire & Rescue Services.
What Learners Will Gain
Learners will gain practical exposure to:
Fire suppression techniques.
Rescue operations.
Emergency medical assistance.
Fire prevention campaigns.
Fire station operations.
Equipment maintenance.
Vehicle and apparatus handling.
Incident response procedures.
Occupational safety practices.
Duties and Responsibilities
Successful learners will assist with operational activities in accordance with the Fire Brigade Services Act, Act 99 of 1987.
Duties may include responding to fire emergencies.
Learners may participate in emergency rescue operations.
They may render basic medical care.
They may operate firefighting equipment.
They may maintain firefighting vehicles.
They may clean and maintain fire stations.
They may assist with fire prevention education.
They may support community awareness programmes.
They may participate in emergency training exercises.
They may also perform related operational duties under supervision.
Additional Requirements for Shortlisted Candidates:
Shortlisted candidates will be required to provide proof of residence.
They will also be required to provide an affidavit confirming residency.
Proof of criminal record status may also be required.
Skills and Competencies:
Applicants should have good interpersonal skills.
Applicants should have good communication skills.
Applicants should have problem-solving ability.
Applicants must be able to communicate in at least two official Western Cape languages.
These languages include English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.
Applicants should have good overall health.
Applicants should have emotional resilience.
Applicants should be able to work under pressure.
Physical Requirements:
Firefighting requires strong physical and mental fitness.
Applicants must not have mental phobias associated with confined spaces.
Applicants must not have phobias associated with heights.
Applicants must not have phobias associated with deep water or water.
Applicants must not have phobias associated with blood, darkness, isolation or corpses.
Shortlisted candidates will undergo physical fitness testing as part of the recruitment process.
Added Advantage:
A valid Code B driverβs licence will be an added advantage.
This may strengthen an application and may support future opportunities within Fire & Rescue Services.
Salary:
Successful applicants will receive a salary ranging from R174 899.90 to R227 049.79 per annum.
The programme also provides valuable municipal workplace experience that may strengthen future employment opportunities.
