PwC opens CA training contracts across South Africa for the 2027 intake
What the firm looks for on your academic record, what trainee accountants actually do during audit season, and how to position your application.

Who qualifies, and who probably should not apply
A SAICA training contract is not a general graduate programme. It has one of the strictest entry filters in the South African corporate market, and applying without meeting the technical base is simply a waste of your afternoon.
To be considered for the PwC CA Training Contract starting in 2027, you must be walking the specific academic line that leads to the Chartered Accountant designation, CA(SA). That means you are currently studying towards an undergraduate degree accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), or you are already lined up for your postgraduate diploma in accounting, commonly known as CTA or honours.
School marks matter more here than in almost any other graduate field. You need a solid matric exemption with Pure Mathematics and English. If you wrote Mathematical Literacy in Grade 12, you do not qualify. Even if you managed high marks in general commercial subjects, SAICA requirements and big-four recruitment policies strictly exclude Maths Lit.
Who should not apply right now:
- Students completing general BCom degrees in marketing, management, economics, or general finance without SAICA accreditation. These degrees do not lead directly to board exams, and you will be rejected at the first screening round.
- Anyone who expects to learn accounting on the job from scratch. You are expected to arrive with the theory of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), corporate tax, and auditing methodology already lodged in your head.
- Final-year students whose marks currently put them below the threshold for postgraduate admission at their university. If you cannot get into CTA, you cannot take up a CA training contract.
If you are on an accredited path but your second-year or third-year marks took a dip, you are not automatically disqualified. However, firms look closely at consistency across core subjects: Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Taxation, and Auditing. Strong performance in Financial Accounting carries the most weight.

The work behind the job title
Many university students think being a first-year trainee accountant, or an "academic clerk", involves high-level advisory discussions with chief financial officers. The reality on the ground is far more basic, demanding, and repetitive.
In your first year, you are essentially learning how a business actually operates from the paper trail upwards. You will spend weeks testing revenue, vouching invoices, confirming bank balances with financial institutions, and performing physical stock counts at client warehouses across your region. During inventory counts, you might find yourself counting pallets of frozen chicken in an industrial cold room at five in the morning or measuring fuel tanks on a mine site.
Audit work runs on tight deadlines determined by financial year-ends and reporting calendars. Between January and April, and again around mid-year, audit teams enter what the profession calls busy season. During these months, working hours stretch well past standard office times. You will spend long days working inside client boardrooms, hot-desking with your audit team, reconciling client spreadsheets that do not balance, and answering technical queries raised by your audit managers.
Beyond client work, you will also be studying for the first SAICA board exam, the Initial Test of Competence (ITC). Juggling full-time client deliverables with board exam preparation tests your physical and mental stamina. It is demanding, structured work where errors are caught by senior team members and sent back for rework.

Getting your application taken seriously
Big accounting firms process thousands of graduate applications every year. Because hiring for 2027 contracts happens well in advance, recruiters rely heavily on automated screening before a human ever opens your file.
Your academic transcript is the single most important document you submit. Do not upload an unreadable photograph of your results. Request an official, clear electronic transcript or statement of results from your university faculty office. Ensure every semester mark is visible and that your degree code clearly identifies the qualification as an accredited CA-stream programme.
Your CV should be brief, clean, and factual. Keep it to two pages maximum. List your matric school, your Grade 12 results (specifically Mathematics and English), your expected graduation dates, and your university marks per subject. If you have worked as an academic tutor, served on a student society committee, or held part-time jobs during holidays, include them. They demonstrate work ethic and time management, which partners value when assessing whether someone can survive busy season.
When you select office locations, be realistic about where you can afford to live. PwC recruits for major centres like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, but also regional offices such as Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, and Mbombela. If you apply for a specific city, be prepared to fund your own relocation and daily travel to client sites. In most audit roles, having a valid driver's licence and reliable transport is practically essential once you start visiting clients.
Why this kind of role is worth taking
Articles are demanding, and the starting salaries for trainee accountants across South Africa are modest compared to the responsibility and hours required. Yet the training contract remains the gold standard of corporate business training in the country.
Over three years, you see the internal engines of dozens of businesses across different sectors, from retail groups and manufacturing plants to banks and public institutions. You learn how corporate governance works, how balance sheets are put together, and where companies typically fail. That exposure compresses ten years of general business experience into three structured years.
Once you pass both board exams and complete your training hours, your market value changes completely. Newly qualified CAs in South Africa rarely struggle for employment. Many stay with the firm as audit managers, while others move directly into corporate financial management, private equity, management consulting, or overseas secondments in London, Dublin, or Sydney.
If you have the discipline to push through CTA and the resilience to handle audit deadlines, securing your 2027 training contract early removes a major burden, leaving you free to focus entirely on passing your final degree subjects.
