What the learnership is

AVBOB, in partnership with the INSETA (the insurance sector's SETA), is offering a 12-month Occupational Certificate: Long-Term Insurance Adviser learnership for unemployed people. It is an NQF Level 5 qualification worth 180 credits.

Learners receive a monthly allowance (stipend) for the duration of the programme. The advert does not state the amount.

The FirstJobly listing is for the Mmabatho (North West) intake. AVBOB says learners must be willing to work at its offices in the listed provinces and branches, and the company decides where each learner is placed.

What a long-term insurance adviser does

Long-term insurance covers products such as funeral cover, life cover and other policies that pay out over many years. An adviser explains these products to clients, helps them choose suitable cover and handles paperwork correctly. A recognised NQF 5 occupational certificate is a strong first step if you want a career in insurance sales, client service or financial advice.

Who can apply

According to the advert you must:

  • Have a valid matric certificate with English, and Maths, Maths Literacy or Accounting
  • Be 18 to 35 years old
  • Be a South African citizen
  • Not have attended a previous learnership
  • Not be registered with another academic institution or busy with other studies
  • Have a reliable mode of transport
  • Have excellent communication skills and basic computer skills (MS Office, email and internet)
  • Be able to work independently and show initiative

A smartphone and/or laptop is an advantage. Preference goes to suitably qualified people from previously disadvantaged groups.

How to stand out

  • Show you can talk to people. Mention customer-facing experience: church or community work, helping in a family business, or volunteering.
  • Prove your computer skills. List the programs you can use rather than writing "computer literate".
  • Be honest about studies. The "no other studies" rule is strict. If you are registered somewhere, deal with that before applying.
  • Explain your transport. Since reliable transport is required, say clearly how you will get to work.

A clean, simple CV helps. You can make one for free with the FirstJobly CV Maker.

Scam warning
