Internships in South Africa

An internship gives you supervised workplace experience in the field you already studied. Unlike a learnership, there is no new qualification at the end — you are converting a diploma or degree you already hold into the practical experience that job adverts keep asking for. Contracts are most often 12 or 24 months and are paid as a stipend.

Government internships make up a large share of what is advertised in South Africa. National and provincial departments run annual intakes, and they are strict in a predictable way: an unemployed-graduate declaration, a fully completed Z83 form, and shortlisting done literally against the requirements printed in the advert. Private-sector internships are looser on paperwork but far more competitive on the interview.

Internships are worth taking seriously as a hiring pipeline rather than a stopgap. Departments and large employers frequently fill entry-level posts from the intern pool, and an internship on your CV closes the experience gap that keeps a recent graduate's applications in the rejection pile.
