Learnerships in South Africa
33 open listings on FirstJobly, newest first.
A learnership is a fixed-term agreement between you, an employer and an accredited training provider. You spend part of your time in a classroom and the rest doing the actual job, and you finish with a full NQF-registered qualification rather than only a certificate of attendance. Most run for 12 months, and almost all pay a monthly stipend while you learn.
Learnerships exist because employers claim SETA grants and B-BBEE skills-development points for running them, which is why intakes cluster around the start of a company's financial year and close quickly once the group is full. That funding model also explains the entry requirements: schemes are aimed at unemployed South Africans, usually 18 to 34, and matric is the common cut-off — though plenty of operational learnerships accept Grade 10 or 11.
The trade-off worth understanding before you apply: a stipend is not a salary. It typically ranges from roughly R3 000 to R6 500 a month depending on the SETA and the sector, and the contract ends when the programme ends. What you are really buying with that year is a recognised qualification plus documented workplace experience — the two things that most often block a first job application.

Applying for learnerships: what matters
Apply with a short CV, not an apologetic one
Learnerships are designed for people with no work history, so a one-page CV listing your subjects, results and any volunteering is exactly right. Do not pad it. State clearly that you are currently unemployed and available immediately — several schemes screen on that alone.
Get your documents certified before you start applying
You will usually be asked for a certified ID copy, matric certificate or latest results, and proof of residence. Certification older than three months is routinely rejected, so certify once and reuse the batch across intakes.
Apply to several intakes in the same sector
Selection is largely a numbers game against a fixed headcount. Applying to five retail or logistics learnerships in the same window is a better use of your effort than one perfect application.
Never pay to be placed
A legitimate learnership is funded by the employer and its SETA. Anyone asking you for a registration, placement or training fee is running a scam — report the advert instead of paying.
