Government vacancies in South Africa

Public service vacancies are advertised in departmental circulars, the DPSA weekly bulletin and municipal notices, then repeated across dozens of sites. The value of a single list is that closing dates and reference numbers stay attached to each post, because those two details are the most common reason an otherwise strong application is thrown out.

Government hiring is rules-based, not impressionistic. A panel scores you against the stated inherent requirements — qualification, years of experience, driver's licence, registration with a professional body — and cannot credit anything you did not evidence. That is genuinely good news for a first-time applicant: if you meet the printed requirements and complete the paperwork correctly, you get scored, regardless of who you know.

Expect the process to be slow. From closing date to appointment commonly runs three to six months, and security vetting or SAQA verification of foreign qualifications adds more. Keep applying elsewhere while you wait, and keep a copy of every submission with its reference number so you can follow up precisely.
