Graduate programmes in South Africa
8 open listings on FirstJobly, newest first.
A graduate programme is a structured first job, usually 18 to 24 months, built around rotations through several departments with a mentor and a formal development plan. Unlike an internship it is normally a permanent or fixed-term employment contract on a real salary, and it is designed to end in a substantive role.
Banks, audit firms, mining houses, FMCG groups and the larger state-owned entities run the biggest intakes in South Africa, and their recruitment calendars are unusually rigid: applications typically open between March and August for a January start. Miss the window and the next opportunity is a full year away, which is why the closing dates on this page matter more than for ordinary vacancies.
Selection is heavier than for most entry-level roles. Expect online aptitude and numerical reasoning tests, a situational judgement questionnaire, a video interview and often an assessment centre with a group exercise and a presentation. Academic results are a screen — many programmes set a minimum average — but the later stages are about how you reason out loud and work with strangers.

Applying for graduate programmes: what matters
Apply the moment applications open
Many programmes assess on a rolling basis and stop when the cohort is filled, well before the advertised closing date. Early applications get more of the recruiter's attention and more scheduling flexibility.
Practise the aptitude tests before you sit them
Numerical and logical reasoning tests are timed and pattern-based, and performance improves markedly with practice. Free sample tests are widely available; use them before you burn a real attempt.
Prepare two or three concrete stories
Assessment centres probe teamwork, conflict and failure. Have specific examples ready — a group project that went wrong, a deadline you saved — with what you personally did and what changed as a result.
Know why this employer, in one sentence
Interviewers can tell a mass application instantly. Read the company's latest results or strategy update and be able to name one thing about the business that genuinely interests you.
